Botticelli- a painter of the Florentine Renaissance
born 1445, Florence
died May 17, 1510, Florence
His real name was Alessandro Di Mariano Filipepi - the Botticelli part was actually a nickname given to him - botticelli meaning literally ’round barrell’. He was apprenticed to Fra Filippo Lippi, whose delicate coloring can be seen in such early works as the Adoration of the Kings (National Gallery, London).
He was one of the greatest colorists in Florence at the time, and became a favorite painter of the Medici, of whom he painted many portraits, and also represented in the Adoration of the Magi, which is displayed in the Uffizi Gallery.
His “Birth of Venus” is among the most famous paintings in history, and certainly among the most well known of Renaissance art.

A true Renaissance polymath: artist, inventor, scientist - Leonardo lived from 1452 to 1519. He was a contemporary of Michelangelo and there are many references to the rivalry between the two.
The first known biography of Leonardo was published in 1550 by Giorgio Vasari. Born in a village near the town of Vinci, in Tuscany, he later moved with his family to Florence, where he eventually became an apprentice to Verrocchio, who was the leading painter/sculptor of the day.
In addition to his art, he worked on mechanics, though geometry was his main interest.
There are three periods to his biography: the Florentine period(1469 - 82), the Milanese period (1483-99); the Nomadic period (1500-19).
Inn 1499 Ludovico il Moro fled Milan ahead of invading French troops. The men of Louis XII used Leonardo’s model for the equestrian statue of Francesco Sforza for target practice. Soon afterwards, Leonardo left Milan, and wandered from place to place. But it was Florence where Leonardo had his greatest following.
Some quotations:
Whoever despises the high wisdom of mathematics nourishes himself on delusion and will never still the sophistic sciences whose only product is an eternal uproar
Anyone who conducts an argument by appealing to Authority is not using his intelligence, he is just using his memory
The merit of painting lies in the exactness of reproduction. Painting is a science and all sciences are based on mathematics. No human enquiry can be a science unless it pursues its path through mathematical exposition and demonstration
