A return

3

the last few months have sped past me. i have been busy regenerating london - what a task. a lot”s been happening here there and everywhere and i shall pick up on my “reporting” and let you know what”s been going on in my neck of the woods.

the world out there has been extremely busy too - I”ve a few things up my sleeve I want to be commenting on - will be more on that shortly.

the streets of London for the last oh - i don”t know how long - last month or so? have been flooded with “free” newspapers competing with the “incumbent” free morning paper - the Metro. In the old days you never got a copy of the Metro if you got on a Tube say at 9:35 or so. Now you have the City AM, London Lite and the London paper shoved down your throat. the City AM people are less shovy - and you don”t generally see them in the evening. It seems to be a showdown between London Lite and the London paper - both will have 2 different people standing like 2 cms away from each other - every 2 mins up and down every street - till about 10:30 p.m. at night - trying to offload lots of copies onto you. As anyone could have predicted, there are now a lot of newspapers on the streets. Perhaps we”ll need an increase in paper recycling bins?

anyhow - there are usually some amusing tidbits one can find in these papers - some are funnier than others. this morning”s City A.M. has a couple that made me giggle and I will be sharing them shortly.

past present and future will be away for the next 2 weeks..

im off on travels. and when i return hopefully there will be plenty of material from my trip to Dhaka, Bangladesh.

in the meantime, here in London this weekend no doubt there will be plenty of rumination on Ken Livingstone”s latest mishap - press headlines across the world are already screaming headlines about “Red Ken and Nazi jibe” and “Mayor Ken suspended..” etc.

Looks like Ken, like myself, will be getting a well earned (well in my case anyway!) rest from worrying about London”s regeneration.

john reid on “war against evil”

6

Press Coverage -John Reid- Secretary of State for Defence - on the ‘war against evil’ in the Daily Express:

“Britain is waging a ‘war against evil’ - John Reid in an interview with the Daily Express expounded the following views:

“This is a war against evil, make no mistake,” he said. “Evil is the same, whether it’s dressed in Nazi uniforms, the supposed socialists of the Red Brigades and so on, or the IRA in Northern Ireland.” { heh, and the same if it’s a nation-state..}

“The terrorists want to commit mass extermination. And if they can get their hands on the means to do it, they will. These people want to destroy the state of Israel. They want to destroy every Jew they can, and every non-Muslim they can.”

hmm now that sounds a bit funny to me -not the intentions of the terrorist to kill non-muslims -that seems to be very clear - but its not like any ‘non-muslims’ haven’t been ‘destroyed’ as well.. [And what bloody difference does it make who anyone is trying to kill. surely the point is that killing anyone is 'not nice' to say the least. !! ] Oh but maybe that wasn’t their aim - those guys just ‘got’ in the way. Oh right, so that makes it all ‘fine’ then - nothing to get ‘het up’ about. Really! this kind of ‘partisan’ thinking is very irritating - ( and you see it everywhere you go. people appear to be only bothered about their particular little tribe. when will wake up and smell the coffee and realize its this kind of ‘tribalism’ and clicqueyness that causes so much trouble?) where is the human rights discourse? - the right of ALL humans to life - regardless of nationality, ethnicity, race, religion, football club, goth or any other line of division you can think up ( and boy are there lots!) Now that to me would be a sophisticated, democratic, liberal, fair and enlightened approach. Anything else smacks of exactly the kind of faulty and deadly thinking ‘terrrorists’ display.

“These evil terrorists are intent on gaining the technology of mass destruction,” he added.

“And the international nature of this extremist, violent fundamentalism adds up to a bigger terrorist threat than we have ever faced before.”

its funny how the discourse of ‘evil’ is still used even in an allegedly ’scientific’ and non-religious way. What is evil but a ‘religious’ concept - bound up with predetermination and all sorts of other silly ideas. Hah . Anyhow, the point is its funny how this bloke says ‘all evil is the same’ replace evil and say stick in something like ‘all killing is the same- its wrong’ and voila! you have a very good point indeed. maybe mr. reid needs to be a bit more reflexive as he clearly doesn’t seem to see the irony in what he’s saying.

Time magazine's Person of the Year: Bono

4

Time magazine has named U2 star Bono - and Bill and Melinda Gates -as its “Persons of the Year,” citing their charitable work and activism aimed at reducing global poverty and improving world health. This is of course set against the backdrop of a year which has seen numerous natural disasters- from the tsunami in South Asia to Hurricane Katrina, and the Live 8 efforts.

“For being shrewd about doing good, for rewiring politics and re-engineering justice, for making mercy smarter and hope strategic and then daring the rest of us to follow, Bill and Melinda Gates and Bono are Time”s Persons of the Year.”

which blogs matter?

0

“A new wave of political bloggers is challenging Britain’s old media pundits. But who are they, and which ones matter? Oliver Burkeman reports...”

i suppose it would be useful to know what Mr. Burkeman is basing his analysis of ‘who matters!’ on - is he just going by blog stats i.e. in terms of who gets most traffic - and who’s managed to make ‘broadcast media’ sit up and take notice? well in that case, first of all, it would be nice to see these stats that he’s used - or maybe its just ’something everyone knows..duh!’

its a bit silly to compare broadcast news to blogs- on a competitive level anyway - because that’s like comparing internet publishing to the publishing industry: its a different scenario isn’t it - one you need to be able to publish something on the web ( ok you need some technical bits and bobs) and the other you need a hell of a lot more to get yourself a publishing contract for your book. one allows an individual to say what he wants without too much interference prior to publication - and the other simply doesn’t allow that because institutions get involved and voila! first you have the editors to deal with and then the publishers need to decide if its something they want to get involved with blah blah. a lot of political economy of media issues involved here - which i just wanted to touch on - obviously its a big deal and something we’ll want to look at later.

but this piece by mr. burkeman seems to imply- to a certain extent anyway-! that blogs don’t matter if they’re not being noticed by the newspapers or ‘big media outlets’…or have plenty of readership for that matter. And is that not one-sided? because then the danger is that blogs will just become like newspapers –’oh how much circulation have you got?’… ‘oh not much..ah well never mind then..’.

Well that’s not the point - i mean sure its nice to have people come and read your blog - but it fulfils a range of different functions than just getting circulation - surely. And that range will depend on the individual obviously. i just think that article somehow treated blogging in a somewhat cut-and dried- way. and before anyone says oh he was talking about ‘political’ bloggin - well actually i think it still applies!

Scaredy cats and Nannies

9

people are such a bunch of scaredy cats sometimes. i swear there are so many wusses around who masquerade as ‘big strong men’ it makes me laugh. what our friend indian capitalist says: ( from one of the ‘debates’ on the guardian newsblog - poor state of affairs -

” Do you even know that many of these old men are rampant womanizers and drunkards? That is why don’t have money. If they live in a decent fashion, then they can manage very well with their savings.

I am against nanny state. Let every person young or old take care of his or her own needs. “

haaah..’rampant womanizers and drunkards..’ dear me! there seems to be a flavour of a moral panic about that phrase. Sounds so much along the lines of… a screaming Nanny shouting ‘..rampant womanizers and drunkards about! Young ladies hide!!..

oh but..he is against a ‘nanny state’.

“comments are closed” ? on the galloway mystery..

the galloway mystery - - tried posting a comment on this entry on the guardian blog and it says:

“Comments have been closed on this entry. We automatically close entries to new comments after 2 days to prevent comment spam, or we may have deemed this particular entry unsuitable for open comments. However, you can still make your opinion known by writing on your own weblog, and linking to this page: our system will pick it up.”

Hmm! well a) it hasn’t been 2 days yet - ( unless im seriously out of sync) and b) well its not true in the sense that they’re not applying their rules correctly to all the other posts in the news blog - and the other Guardian blogs. loads of posts have have comments running for days . i guess they got fed up and decided the comments were too ‘open’ or sth.
