Oh if it were that easy! We still get most of our traffic through Blogger so we are still in transition. But we have an offer of some super web hosting in Germany, from a specialist in activist websites. Once we can find the space for them we also have a sponsor who will give us all the servers we need if we can maintain them. All we need now is a frienly EU country (Ireland, Spain?) free of political crap then off we go. Plus a little bit of WiFi bandwidth (Spain wins on that one-FON)
Check out http://gregoogle.blogspot.com/ who also seems to be working in our ballpark. Yes, let's start a blogger's open source free up the internet campaign. Take it to the people.

The WiFi clusters are just part of a larger idea. This was brought into focus today as we found out we cannot publish on any of our Blogger blogs because of a "database problem" that Blogger claim was fixed on Friday. Europe needs independent community based servers to offer free web hosting on a non-profit basis. Chirac and Merkel want to spend one billion euros setting up a European Google called Quaero.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quaero
Maybe the money would be better spent giving Europe's citizens some internet autonomy. Small local and intermeshed database servers would be less vulnerable to political control or technical blips.

Ceri, that's a great idea, too, about the WIFI clusters. When do you guys'n'gals take your project to Peru?

What a cool idea. I have a very good friend in Australia who makes these kind of documentaries. I'll send him the link. We are working on an interesting project to set up community open source servers based on free WiFi. Leighton is trying to set up a pilot project in Amsterdam, which already has free WiFi. The idea is to build clusters of servers that offer free hosting to the local community. He's on Radio Patapoe on Tuesday 5pm to talk about it.
