Reform of Licensing Laws

November 23, 2005 – 5:51 pm

right so now that’s gone ahead - it goes into effect midnight - but of course as the government are keen to point out - not many places are actually going to have 24-hour drinking. ( to which no doubt the police will heave a sigh of relief)

Realistically, only a third of places will be open later - but the question is - who’s going to stay open later?? And how do we find out? Either they ought to collectively issue a press release- or someone should find out, compile a list, stick it up on the web - and hey presto! those of us who like to go out later can take our pick. In London apparently only 5000 outlets will be open later ( and unfortunately apparently in Soho there is a blanket ban on new late licences or extensions to existing late licences - pah)

i’d also like to find out if cafe’s and other places will be opening later…

  4. There was a supplement in the Wednesday edition of the Evening Standard which listed all the pubs which had been granted new licences in about two thirds of the London Boroughs.

Those boroughs which hadn’t sorted out all of their paperwork were omitted.

Crushingly, Islington was one of them.

Though I’m sure it won’t take me long to find somewhere, eh? >;->

  7. ” whilst alcohol over-usage can certainly cause those social problems you sound just like the tories on this one. the whole point of extending drinking hours is to avoid this bingy thing”

From what ive read, the police did not “heave a sigh of relief”, as the rate of trouble has been similar. To think that the laws will stop bingeing and related problems is a fallacy. People will still binge, and probably drink more where 24 hour opportunities exist.
