perceptions of women

November 21, 2005 – 8:04 pm

One in three blames women for being raped :

” One in three people believes that women who behave flirtatiously are at least partially responsible if they are raped, a report published today reveals. A similar number think that women are partially or wholly responsible for being raped if they are drunk, and more than a quarter believe women are responsible if they wear sexy or revealing clothing”

well at least amnesty agree with me that this report’s findings are ’shocking’ but i suppose we shouldn’t be really surprised should we?

pah.

the robert swipe show has a very amusing post on this- check it out- i think its particularly interesting given the fact people seem to not want to acknowledge that women globally face these issues. yah it depends from place to place what ‘modesty/leading on..’ is - but there you have it.

then take a look at the BBC’s have your say forum on this topic…

following extract from that forum:

“I was in Wales at the weekend. Freezing cold and foggy Wales. The boys/men in the town were wrapped up in coats, but the girls were wanding around half naked. Do they not have a single brain cell? They were shivering, crouched over hobbling along with horrible blotchy skins. And why? Because they are so vacuous that they believe existence for the opposite sex is the number one priority.”

well ok it maybe isn’t so clever to wander around in the cold. but there’s no point making it sound like the boys are so smart. for goodness sake the girls are conforming to the ‘norm’ - which does happen to include things like well you’re going out so you’d better look like this - it might be different somewhere else, but most people follow the norm, and it so happens in society that seen to be attractive is very important.
And if it happened to be the norm for boys they’d be no doubt doing it too. ( not like a lot of them are able to stand up to peer pressure when it comes to drinking someone under the table, or whatever else it’s supposed to be ‘macho’ to do. )

anyway the other thing that amuses me is that a lot of what people have to say about this topic ( on the forum) makes them sound like a bunch of mullahs. There you go.

  1. 29 Responses to “perceptions of women”

  2. Lol..a relative of mine often jokes that a day will come when the majority of people in the West will follow many cultural norms of Muslim states..when that happens Muslim states will probably be copying the west nowadays!

  3. If women don’t dress in proper manner, if they don’t use the right kind of language, if they stay out late then they only have it coming- this is not my point of view, it is the point of view of the mullahs of Islam and also the mullahs of Hinduism. So before you start nitpicking on how the west treats its women, kindly spare a thought on how the third world treats its women.

That is where you European Liberals fail most miserably. Your obsession with casting stones and bricks on Western conservative mores leaves little room for a discussion on the fate of the females rotting under the obnoxious burka.
I am all for woman’s liberation, I am all for equal opportunities for women and men.

By IC on Nov 22, 2005

  4. Earlier also I had left three comments on your blog, but they don’t appear. I guess like all European liberals you too are selective about the free speech that you purport to allow.

Ah the white supermacist syndrome (my way or the highway syndrome) is at it again, even in the blog-sphere…

By IC on Nov 22, 2005

  5. I think one of the key factors forming public opinions here are these high profile ‘rape’ cases brought against celebrity footballers. They give rape victims a very bad name. Also some rare but high profile cases where some crazy woman makes the whole thing up.

Plus the public, in general, are really quite stupid.

  6. Great blog by the way.

    By j0nz on Nov 22, 2005

  7. Hello there - thank you Jonz! IC - please see the post i put up when i realized no comments were getting through - i’d been trying to deal with the spam bots! how does everyone else deal with them? I tried to dispense with comment moderation as i think it would be nice for people’s comments to go up straight away without me having to moderate them into human and non-human comments. unfortunately i’ve had to leave the moderation thing in there as otherwise i get about 100 comments from the penis enlaragement crew. so this means that if i am not looking at the blog ( which im not doing 100% of the time!) then you might have to wait to see your comment up here.

come on yaar- IC - i’ve let so many of your ‘vicious’ comments through - they’re so entertaining - why would i want to block them?

    hee heeh

  8. “Mullahs of Hinduism”?

IC, yes of course there are idiotic views on who’s to blame for a rape in the developing world, but should we in the West really be judging ourselves by those standards? Should we not try to set an example for the countries we criticise, instead of just criticising them?

But I agree with j0nz as well - the public are, on the whole, thick as shit.

  11. why thank you! im very honoured - i will stick a link to you as well :-)
i don’t think its a case of ‘copying’ ‘other people’s’ norms - all this stuff about ‘copying’ the West - i think its more about realizing that these realizing we’re all a lot more similar than we think.

By sonia on Nov 22, 2005

  12. hmm IC you poor thing you don’t really like to see what im saying do you - are you so worried we might actually agree on sth…

sonia is a common name in Latin America - for women..

it was Cimurai who thinks i’m a man. that’s fine - i guess in his book it was a compliment! I wasn’t trying to impress on him that i was a female - he just seemed convinced that i couldn’t possibly be…

  17. hmm - are they still in the category of ‘for male eyes’ only? he heh!

By sonia on Nov 22, 2005

  18. actually i had a look at that link - and its pretty gross. luckily i have very bad eyesight and i wasn’t wearing my specs! i think maybe you should change the warning - there are plenty of men about who wouldn’t want to see that. MANGLED BODY PARTS. That’s really disgusting. I wasn’t sure what the point was though Cimurai? Perhaps you could write something about the incident
( alright i see your links) its not really for me to delete if they are ‘unsuitable’ if you think that don’t stick the link up. i dont like having to play censor.

anyway we’ve seen the links - it would be more interesting if you said what you were thinking.

  19. sonia,

There are (still) a lot of beautiful (nature) places around there, rare species of animals, plants, insects ets. can be found in most (remote) part of the area, … so if you like to have some ‘rare’ experiences, it’s a good chance in a life time to make a (studies/research) trips there. ………I bet you won’t regrets.

By Cimurai on Nov 22, 2005

  20. around where? Indonesia? im sure its beautiful. i could do without the insects though.

  21. Jesus holy christ Cimurai that’s were some intense links.

One of them “Massacres in Borneo: 3,000 Beheaded truly shocking”.

    By j0nz on Nov 22, 2005

  22. I watched a programme on this the other day. At the end of the day we live in a harsh world where people must take responsibility and accept the world they like in. In a lot of instances, what the women was doing and wearing at the time of rape are key factors in the occurance.
