“Concerned Women for America”
November 1, 2005 – 4:09 pmso the saga goes on - George Bush has now picked another nominee for the Supreme Court - Samuel Alito - a nice, conservative judge, whose record on civil rights and abortion isn’t quite clear. well what that means is that we have reason to suspect his views on these topics would elicit approval from the far right. which means: we don’t know that he would try to overturn Roe v Wade (the 1973 ruling that guaranteed the right to an abortion) ; but opinions expressed in the past make it somewhat likely.
one indicator is that the Concerned Women for America group have been one of the first to welcome Alito’s nomination. Aha! and who are these lovely ladies? ” a conservative christian group” ( politically very active) who are in favour of the following- amongst other things :
- working against abortion ( of course they refer to it as ’sanctity of life’ - if that were the case then they ought to be anti-war campaigners first and foremost)
- the family unit must be ‘one man - one woman’ so they’re opposed to gay marriage.
anyway gives you a general flavour - a bunch religious conservatives and fundamentalists. Hijacking the voice of ‘women’ ( pah)

–hmm interesting the imagery they’re trying to evoke - isn’t it? Pioneer women, good puritan stock.. we get the general picture ladies..
The leading lady is Beverly LaHaye - and if the surname rings a bell - then its cos she’s married to Tim LaHaye - who of course is the author of those ridiculous books - the LeftBehind series. The wonderful apocalyptic books which sat at the top of the New York Times bestseller lists for ages. worryingly so. ( where do you think a large amount of the nonsense about the UN Secretary General representing “Anti-Christ” come from? ha ha)

tangential comment - the Left Behind series spawned lots of other books - I got handed one at Waterloo station ( i forget what it was called but sth along the lines of ‘who didnt get left behind’ - some sort of pun on the original titles) - and my God was it one of the nastiest scariest things i ever read. Very miserable and depressing.
